A 4-day Marrakech to Merzouga desert tour is a good choice if you want to see the Sahara without turning the whole trip into one long drive. This route crosses the High Atlas, continues through southern Morocco, reaches the Erg Chebbi dunes near Merzouga, and returns to Marrakech with time for important stops on the way.
Marrakech → Aït Ben Haddou → Ouarzazate → Draa Valley → Zagora → Merzouga → Todra Gorge → Dades → Marrakech
Why choose a 4-day desert trip from Marrakech?
Merzouga is far from Marrakech. A shorter tour can work, but it usually means long driving days. Four days gives you more room for stops, a calmer desert evening, and time to see places such as Aït Ben Haddou, the Draa Valley, Todra Gorge and the Dades area.
This is still a road trip, so expect several hours in the vehicle each day. The advantage is that the landscape changes often: mountain roads, old kasbahs, palm valleys, rocky desert and finally the large dunes of Erg Chebbi.

4-day Marrakech to Merzouga route
Day 1: Marrakech to Zagora via the High Atlas
Leave Marrakech in the morning and cross the High Atlas Mountains. A common first major stop is Aït Ben Haddou, the famous fortified ksar near Ouarzazate. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the best-known examples of traditional earthen architecture in southern Morocco.
Continue through Ouarzazate and toward the Draa Valley. The road becomes greener around the long palm groves before reaching the Zagora area. Depending on the final route, the first night can be in Zagora or another stop in the Draa Valley.
Day 2: Zagora to Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi dunes
The journey continues east through small desert towns and wide open landscapes. Routes often pass through places such as Tazarine, Nkob or Alnif before reaching the Merzouga region.
Near Merzouga, the scenery changes quickly as the Erg Chebbi dunes come into view. A typical desert stay may include a camel ride around sunset and an overnight camp. Exact activities depend on the option you book, so it is worth checking what is included before you leave Marrakech.
Day 3: Merzouga, Rissani, Todra Gorge and Dades
Start early if you want to see the desert light around sunrise. After breakfast, leave the dunes and travel north-west. Some routes stop around Rissani before continuing toward Tinghir and Todra Gorge.
Todra is a useful place to stretch your legs after the drive. Continue toward the Dades Valley for the night. The road here is known for red rock scenery, villages and dramatic valley views.
Day 4: Dades to Marrakech
The final day returns toward Marrakech through the south and the High Atlas. Depending on the route and road conditions, stops may include Ouarzazate, Skoura or viewpoints on the mountain road.
Expect to arrive back in Marrakech later in the day. Do not plan a tight airport connection on the same evening. Mountain roads, traffic and photo stops can change the arrival time.
Good to know before you go
- It is a long-distance trip. Four days is more comfortable than rushing the same route into fewer days, but there is still plenty of driving.
- Bring layers. Desert days and nights can feel very different, especially outside summer.
- Ask about luggage. A small overnight bag is easier for camp nights than a large suitcase.
- Confirm the camp type. Standard and upgraded camps can be very different.
- Check what is included. Meals, entrance fees, guides and camel rides vary by operator and package.

Best time for a Marrakech to Merzouga desert trip
Spring and autumn are usually the easiest seasons for this route. Days are generally more comfortable for walking and desert stops. Summer can be extremely hot in the Sahara, while winter nights can be very cold.
If you travel in summer, expect early starts and more time indoors or in the vehicle during the hottest hours. In winter, bring a warm layer for the evening and early morning.
What to pack for four days
- Comfortable shoes for kasbahs, gorges and short walks
- Sunglasses, sunscreen and a hat
- A warm layer for the desert night
- A small day bag for the camp
- Water and any personal medicine you need
- A power bank for long driving days
Is this route right for you?
This trip suits travelers who want to see more of southern Morocco and do not mind several hours of road travel. It works well for couples, friends and families with older children who enjoy changing landscapes and overnight stops.
If you only want a short desert-style evening near Marrakech, Agafay is much closer. If your main goal is the large Sahara dunes, Merzouga is the better match.
4 days or 3 days to Merzouga?
A 3-day route is popular when time is limited, but the return to Marrakech can feel very long. Four days gives you more flexibility for the desert region and more time to stop on the road. If your Morocco itinerary allows it, the extra day usually makes the journey easier to enjoy.
Plan the route before booking
Ask for the exact overnight stops, pickup time, camp type and return time before you confirm. Routes can change with weather, road conditions and the accommodation selected. A clear day-by-day plan makes it much easier to compare options.
